The Evolution of the Ford Ranger PX2 & PX3 Centre Console Storage Bin
Some products start as an idea.
This one started as a problem.
The factory centre console in the Ford Ranger PX2 and PX3 leaves a lot of unused space. We set out to fix that — properly. Not with a loose insert. Not with something that rattles. A true direct-fit solution that integrates cleanly and feels factory.
Real-World Testing Across Four Vehicles
This wasn’t a single test-fit project.
The original black variant (pictured above) was installed and tested in four different Rangers over a period of one year. These weren’t static installs — they were daily-driven vehicles, opened and closed constantly, loaded with keys, tools, wallets, and everything else that ends up in a work ute console.
The first version proved the concept:
-
Clean fitment
-
Solid structure
-
Practical storage
But testing doesn’t stop at “good enough.”
Customer Feedback → Design Refinement
Two clear themes emerged from users:
-
“It would be great if it was even stronger and a bit deeper.”
-
“I struggled a little removing the original version.”
And another request came through:
“Can you make an organiser version with a divider and more functionality?”
That feedback shaped the next iteration.
Because at GridShift, feedback isn’t noise — it’s design input.
What Changed
We went back to the CAD and reworked the structure.
Strength Upgrades
-
Reinforced wall geometry
-
Improved base support
-
Increased overall durability
Increased Depth
-
Better use of available console volume
-
More usable storage space without interfering with the lid
Two Variants Available
-
Standard Storage Bin – clean, open layout with strength upgrades
-
Organiser Variant – integrated divider and added features for structured storage
Improved Removal
We added integrated finger pickup points, making removal simple and controlled. No more fighting the fit.
Rubber Floor Inserts
We also included rubber base liners:
-
Easier cleaning
-
Reduced rattle
-
Better protection for stored items
Small detail. Big difference.
The Engineering Challenge
Here’s where it got interesting.
We discovered a key trade-off during development: Increased structural strength began to negatively affect lid fitment.
Too strong, too rigid — and the centre console lid would no longer retain its original closing and latching feel.
That wasn’t acceptable.
The bin had to:
-
Maintain factory lid closing behaviour
-
Retain original latch engagement
-
Sit firmly without distortion
-
Be removable
-
Be stronger than the original prototype
Those criteria don’t naturally coexist.
After multiple iterations, tolerance adjustments, and structural refinement, we found the balance point — reinforcing where needed while preserving controlled compliance in the right areas.
The result:
✔ Strength
✔ Fitment
✔ OEM latch retention
✔ Ease of removal
✔ Functional upgrades
No compromise.
Built with Purpose
This isn’t just a plastic insert.
It’s a product that went through:
-
Multi-vehicle validation
-
One year of real-world use
-
Customer-driven redesign
-
Structural refinement
-
Fitment optimisation
Designed to integrate cleanly.
Built to handle daily use.
Refined because people asked for better — and we delivered it.

That’s how we build at GridShift.
